2019 RGSA 37th Annual Meeting Minutes (1st QTR)

Members Present: Robin Hastings (Pres & Safety Officer), Steve Crye (VP), Hadley Robinson (Sect’y), Lee Boone (Treasurer), Bill Cummings, Terry Cummings (Interim Sect’y), Rod Burton, Wyatt Lines, Bill Cobb, Dave Andrews, Alejandra Aragon
Non-members Present: Nancy Hastings, Carey Guthrie, Mauricio Aragon
Called to Order: 7:25 PM by VP Crye
- OLD BUSINESS:
- Robin welcomed all present and called for 2019 membership sign-up and collection of annual dues (See Treasurer’s Report); Reviewed this meeting’s agenda which included the Election of January2019-January 2020 Officers
- Minutes of the October quarterly meeting were not read.
- Robin outlined 2018 RGSA HG and PG flying events as followed: a) Guadalupe Mts- two paragliders (pg) but mostly hang gliders (hg); b) Memorial Day Dry Canyon Fly-In- lightly attended, Patrick (pg) flew 100+ miles xc; c) Columbus Day Fly-In- all hgs due to too windy conditions for pgs (see Oz Report)
- Steve identified that the RGSA’s sister club, Sandia Soaring Association (SSA), accomplished a major rework of the Sandia Peak launch and that a pilot needs to be checked off on one flight by any SSA member before he/she can use the Tram
- Treasurer’s Report:
- Lee and Had reported that RGSA treasury held $2.859.65, not including the dues collected at tonight’s RGSA Annual meeting; Lee offered that keeping an accurate Balance is difficult due to the Bank changing everything over to electronic; additionally, Lee is not an authorized RGSA account signer so authorization needs to be transferred in the near future; Robin and Hadley are both authorized signers; PayPal deposits will be passed on to Steve
- New Business:
- Future account/banking business: different Bank proposed w/ WestStar Bank and ALL Fly-in cash-in-hand has to flow w/ transparency
- Steve and Had will be the RGSA Web Team; Steve will create an easy update action
- Members were told that the 2019 Secretary must file w/ USHPA, but as of this meeting’s date, RGSA is current
- Report on Flying Sites: Mt Riley (Steve)- is a hike and cautioned that the boulders will catch your pg’s lines; Volcanic Peak (Robin)- said he and Bill Cummings cleaned around the launch site (Exit 16 off of I10 W, ideal site for a NNE wind; Roads tend to flood, are usually in good shape for 2-wheel drive; Torrey Paso (Steve)- the result of the “carpet project” showed that the winds are too strong for the present anchoring used so another option is necessary; Little Floridas in Deming (Steve)- Reported that Wyatt had a pg xc flight….the first from that site
- Training Program Report: Doing OK; Juan Mira (Hobbs) trained at Lookout Mt (Chattanooga, TN), had a 3.5 hr flight at Little Floridas; Hadley has two new students, Keith Campbell is seeking pg lessons; Mike Christianson (Salt Lake now in Hobbs) looking for a Club; A major issue for fly-ins is the need for drivers!; Club still needs to recruit new hg/pg pilots!
- Tommy West: Members were notified that Tommy passed away (brain cancer) on January 6; Tommy and his wife Cindy (deceased) promoted hg; Proposal that the 2019 Memorial Day Fly-In be dedicated/renamed the Tommy and Cindy West Memorial Day Fly-In w/ further discussion at the RGSA’s May 4th Quarterly Meeting
- Election of 2019 RGSA Officers: President- Terry Cummings (Lee, second by Steve) 10 yay, 1 nay; Vice President- Wyatt Lines (volunteered on the condition that one of the quarterly meetings be held in Deming, after discussion, Lee seconded) unanimous yay; Treasurer- Steve (Lee, second by Had) unanimous yay; Secretary- Hadley (Lee, second by Bill Cummings and Wyatt) unanimous yay; Safety Officer- Robin (Lee, second by member consent)
- Meet Head: Wyatt volunteered w/ Robin and Nancy offering to help/train
- Event Trophies: Lee volunteered to put together trophies for the Memorial Day Fly-In at Dry Canyon
- BBQ: Bill and Terry donated their bbq to RGSA for Club use and storage
- 2019 Events Planned: Memorial Day Fly-In (May), Columbus Day Fly-In (Oct), Guadalupes (January-Presidents’ Day); Gray Hill camp-out; Informal gatherings at Dry Canyon
- Sites’ Status: Dry Canyon and the Franklin Mts are the only insured sites; Mag Rim can have a gate and Robin will spearhead talking to Tiki (re BLM) about installation of a gate;
- Meeting adjourned at 9:20 PM
- Next RGSA meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at Bill and Terry’s house (1501 Aspen Ave, Las Cruces, Terry- 575-644-8996, Bill- 575-640-5164) w/ home-cooked dinner at 7:00 followed by the meeting at 8:00 PM.
